Adult Health May Be Affected by Premature Birth

People are rarely surprised by infant mortality rate when it comes to premature babies. It has long been known that premature babies may suffer from potential health problems such as heart and respiratory problems. These problems are typically caused by the lack of development during the first trimester of pregnancy.

What a recent study has shown and what people don't know is that health problems associated with premature birth might actually come back to haunt them later on in life. According to the study, most deaths and health problems for these adults were caused by cardiovascular or respiratory problems or endocrine health problems.

Preterm births are a common recurrence in the American population. The most common health problems faced by preterm children are less developed organs such as the heart or jaundice upon childbirth. Preterm birth has also been associated with higher infant mortality. The main problem is that there is little evidence to suggest what exactly causes health problems to resurface in childhood. Screening for diseases can help though the actual indicators and causes are still relatively vague. This means that staying in tip top shape is one of the better ways to combat the onset of potential disease. And of course getting armed with health insurance coverage ensures that you get the treatment you need without thinking so much on the health care cost.

In order to analyze the potential health problems faced by these adults, a research team in Sweden studied 675,000 people, nearly 28,000 of which were preterm babies. These people were born between the years of 1973 and 1979 and followed all the way up to 2008. The study found that an eight percent of the group were at risk of mortality in the younger age groups whereas the risk was at four percent for the age groups between the 18 to 36 range.

The research team responsible for the new study was led by Dr. Casey Crump who is an assistant professor at Stanford specializing in the clinical field. Though he has agreed that the findings are relevant, he also concurs that there is no explanation as of yet for the mortality rate; though he presumes that there could be possible developmental latency for the conditions.

As a whole the study concludes that preterm babies face health problems. The only issue though is that there is no additional evidence – apart from the obvious of what causes it.
