Healthy Way of Lowering Cholesterol: Soy Diet Trumps Low Fat Diet

Cardiovascular disease is the number one reason why people may have shorter life spans and eating a proper diet might just be the solution. Instead of strictly staying away from animal fat, a cholesterol lowering diet can be more beneficial ý and this can be achieved by adding nuts, soy and plant sterols into your diet.

In the study that was done by Dr. David Jenkins and his team, they found that there's a great benefit in adopting a diet that has cholesterol lowering foods. Their study was made up of participants with high cholesterol diet. Those that followed the portfolio diet lowered their levels of cholesterol by 13% after just six months of that diet. As for the LDL reduction for those who stuck to the traditional diet, itýs lower by about 10%.

Aside from going on this diet which is mostly plant-based approach, lead researcher Dr. Jenkins of the Canada Research Chair at the University of Toronto also says that statin treatment might do very well too.

Low cholesterol diet is made up of four food types recognized by the FDA. These are soy protein, sticky fiber like oats and barley, nuts like walnuts and almonds and plant sterol esters. The people that participated in the study were divided into three groups. There were those that stuck to low fat diet, there were those that got the portfolio diet with counseling for two sessions and there was the group that had the portfolio diet with counseling for seven sessions. The figures showed that LDL cholesterol was significantly reduced with those on the portfolio diet.

Those that got intensive counseling, seven sessions of it got the most progress. You might opt to eat healthy diet but it's going to take some encouragement to keep at it.
