Health Solution for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder during nighttime. According to a news report from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released, Aug. 8, 2011, the most effective way of treating sleep apnea is the CPAP or the continuous positive airway pressure machine.

The CPAP machine will pump some air to the person suffering from sleep apnea while he is sleeping. This treatment is highly recommended since it can improve the patient's sleep and it can also reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea. However, this treatment consists of some side effects which include nosebleeds, chest discomfort, dry nose and mouth. In some cases, patients also feel that they are trapped. These side effects cause some patients from leaving the CPAP treatment.

According to the report by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), there is another treatment and this is using a mouthpiece also known as mandibular advancement device. This is also an effective treatment for patients who have sleep apnea condition. This treatment causes the patient to move his jaw in order to keep the airway open. This is the alternative treatment for patients who are not comfortable with the CPAP treatment. However, the mandibular advancement device also contains some side effects including damaged teeth.

Other treatments include surgery in order to clear the passage of airway and weight loss. But according to the Tufts Medical Center Evidence-Based Practice Center, these treatments are not so effective in treating sleep apnea.

There are about 12 million Americans who are having sleep apnea condition and there are still more who are not yet diagnosed. According to AHRQ, sleep apnea which is caused by blockage of airway passage can lead to severe conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure as well as diabetes.
