Blood Testing Is a Health Risk to Heart Attack Patients

Taking blood from patients for medical testing can make patients even more ill according to a new study. Sometimes doctors failed to notice this incident. Further research shows that at least 50% of heart attack patients arrive in hospitals with normal red blood cells. But unfortunately when they go home, they have already anemia. Anemia is caused by insufficient supply of red blood cells. Oftentimes these patients suffer anemia symptoms very seriously.

According to Dr. Mikhail Kosiborod of Saint Luke's Mid America Heart and Vascular Institute in Kansas City, Missouri, patients who are having moderate anemia suffers from shortness of breath and even fatigue. Although, he further comments that this does not mean that anemia can lead to a bad outcome but it is surely a risk factor. In order to understand more about the causes that lead to the loss of blood of these patients, Kosiborod and some of his colleagues observe more than 17,000 heart attack patients who were admitted at 57 hospitals across the United States. All of these patients are admitted having normal blood counts. They found out that one of five patients have developed anemia while staying at the hospital. Some patients have moderate anemia while others have severe anemia. They further found out that these patients who are having anemia have lost at least 5.9 ounces of blood, while those patients who do not have anemia only lost 2.8 ounces of blood for laboratory testing.

Health insurance can greatly help us in times of our difficulty especially during uncertain medical treatments. Patients who are having health insurance suffer less stress than those who do not. Extracting blood from patients is important. But doctors must also take consideration if it is really needed, according to Kosiborod. This article comes from the Archives of Internal Medicine and the research is conducted by Dr. Mikhail Kosiborod.
