How Business Health Insurance Plans Benefit You

Business health insurance plans (group plans) can provide essential medical coverage for business owners, employees and their dependants.

Group health insurance is one of the most common forms of health coverage available in the US. This is because group health plans are a very affordable way to get comprehensive coverage. The majority of Americans are enrolled on group health plans through employer schemes.

How does group insurance work?

Typically, under a group health plan the employer would cover up to 50% of the employee's monthly premium. When a new employee starts in their job they will be given the opportunity to join the health plan.

To prevent people from joining the company and then claiming straight away on the health plan there will be a waiting period. During this time, new members cannot make any claims on the insurance. Waiting periods for new members is usually 6 months.

What coverage do I need?

If you are an employer then you will need to offer a range of basic health coverage for your employees. This can include coverage for the following:

  • Critical illness
  • In-patient hospital stays
  • Out-patient services
  • Doctors office visits
  • Specialist referrals
  • and screenings
  • Preventative care

There are also a number of ways in which you can increase coverage for your employees. Adding additional coverage to your main plan can increase premiums; however, this may ensure that your employees get more comprehensive coverage. Additional options can include:

  • Maternity coverage (can include new born baby coverage as well)
  • Psychiatric treatment - not all policies will provide coverage for mental as well as physical conditions. This can be an expensive form of treatment so adding psychiatric treatment to health plans could be an important benefit.
  • Tests for non-acute conditions - some health plans will only offering tests for acute conditions. You could also consider provider cover for non-acute diagnostic tests also such as for allergies.
