Diastolic Dysfunction and Its Health Implications for Heart Failure

The risk for heart failure can actually be indicated by heart trouble known as diastolic dysfunction. According to research, having this heart condition can increase in intensity and worsen over time leading to risk of heart failure. Based on the population, the older people gets, the more prone they are to have diastolic dysfunction.

The study that was done by the Olmsted County Heart Function Study in Minnesota had more than 2000 participants. Spanning through the ages of 45 and up, these people were assessed from the year 1997 to 2000. The diastolic L ventricular function of each of the participants was graded as mild, moderate, severe or normal. From the time that dysfunction was graded, they were invited back years after the study in between the years of 2001 and 2004 to see about new onset of heart failure. A little over 1400 of them came up positive in the follow–up testing done through 2004 and 2010.

Between the two examinations, the degree of prevalence of the diastolic dysfunction rose. It was 24% in the first exam and 39% on the second. As for moderate to severe diastolic dysfunction, it leapfrogged from 6.4% to 16%. The figures became even grimmer in the 4 years after the initial examinations. Diastolic functions worsened on more than 23% of the participants but 68% remained unchanged and 9% showed some improvement.

It's been found that older people, particularly the participants over the age of 65, had a bigger potential to develop diastolic dysfunction. In the six years after the 2nd examination, there were 81 of the participants who developed heart failure. Again, seniors, 65 and above showed that they're more prone to develop heart failure. Knowing this now, you can dramatically reduce its occurrence if you have health insurance plan that covers for early detection and treatment of diastolic dysfunction or coverage that can cover preventive measures in the development of heart failure.
