Health Gain for Older People Who Are Suffering From Lung Cancer
Older patients who have lung cancer can get more benefits if they are given two- drug chemo which is usually used by younger patients. This is what the researchers in France have just recently discovered. But some people are now questioning the standard health recommendations for elderly patients. The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommended that doctors should not expose elder patients to two-drug chemo. Physicians only provide elder patients with less harsh medications which are also less effective such as giving them chemotherapies which only consist of a single agent. This is simply because they think that providing elderly patients with dual chemo can only cause great risks and side effects.
According to Dr. Elisabeth Quoix, the author of the study from the department of chest diseases at Hopitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg at the University of Strasbourg, the study shows clearly that dual chemo can be feasible to elder lung cancer patients. She even stated that the survival rates of these elderly patients from lung cancer are very much comparable to the younger patients who are taking the dual-drug regimen.
Among the different types of cancer, lung cancer is the most cancer killer condition in the whole world. The risk of lung cancer has been growing through the years. The lung cancer rates amount the elderly patients has increased. According to diagnosis, elder people who are between 63 and 70 are the ones who are likely to have lung cancer. Quoix states that around 50% of lung cancer patients are elderly people.
Lung cancer is a deadly disease and must be treated immediately. The more effective the treatment is, the greater the percentage of survival rates even to elderly patients. Elderly patients can also benefit from doubled chemotherapy which is only provided to younger patients for the fear that it can cause some side effect to the elders. This article comes from Health Day and the research was conducted by Dr. Elisabeth Quoix, from the department of chest diseases at Hopitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg at the University of Strasbourg.
