Evaluating Short term Health Insurance Quotes

Short term health insurance quotes can be a practical solution if you want cover but are on a tight budget.

Typically short term health insurance policies are cheaper than the more comprehensive long-term options. They cannot provide as much cover but do offer protection against the major medical costs in life. This can include things like hospital care, emergency room treatment and surgery.

Advantages of short-term health insurance

There are a number of advantages to choosing short-term health plans. These include:

  • Fast coverage - you can get coverage in just 24 hours in some cases. This is ideal if you need health cover fast.
  • Flexible terms - you can choose how long you want your plan for. Most short-term policies are available from 1 month through to 12 months. However there are some new products on the market that can now offer you cover for up to 36 months.
  • Covering gaps - short-term policies can bridge any gaps in your main health care cover. For example if you have just joined an employer-sponsored group plan then it is likely you will have to undergo a waiting period. During this you will not be able to claim on your insurance. A short-term policy can provide cover over this time.
  • Easy application - it is much easier to apply for short-term health insurance than other types of plans. There will be no physical exam to undergo in most cases and no lengthy health surveys to fill in. This saves a lot of time and hassle for applicants.

Disadvantages of short-term health insurance

As with any health plan there are also a few disadvantages to short-term cover:

  • Ongoing illness - If you fall ill during your short-term policy it could run out before you have finished treatment. You might find it difficult to renew your policy or get a new one whilst you are still ill.
  • Coverage - not all conditions and situations will be covered. This means you may not be able to claim on your short-term insurance for certain treatments.
  • Payout limits - short-term policies often have maximum pay out limits on coverage. This means if your health costs are high your cover might fall short. You would then have to pay the remaining costs out of your own pocket.
